About Nephrology
Introduction
The Nephrology department provides a comprehensive inpatient and outpatient service for kidney disease, including acute and chronic kidney disease. There is an active renal replacement therapy programme which includes treatment with chronic peritoneal dialysis or haemodialysis and renal transplantation.
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
A progressive condition that results in a gradual loss of kidney function.
Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)
A sudden and often reversible decline in kidney function, typically due to various underlying causes.
Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
High blood pressure can lead to kidney damage and is both a cause and a consequence of kidney disease.
Diabetic Nephropathy
Kidney damage caused by diabetes, particularly in individuals with uncontrolled blood sugar levels.
Glomerulonephritis
Inflammation of the glomeruli, the tiny filtering units in the kidneys, which can result from various underlying conditions.
Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)
An inherited disorder characterized by the growth of numerous cysts in the kidneys.
Kidney Stones (Nephrolithiasis)
Hard mineral and salt deposits that form in the kidneys and can lead to pain and blockages.
Nephrotic Syndrome
A condition characterized by excess protein in the urine, low levels of albumin in the blood, and swelling (edema).
Interstitial Nephritis
Inflammation of the spaces between kidney tubules that can result from infections, medications, or autoimmune diseases.
Renal Artery Stenosis
Narrowing of the renal arteries that can reduce blood flow to the kidneys and lead to hypertension.
Alport Syndrome
A genetic disorder that can lead to kidney failure, hearing loss, and eye abnormalities.
Amyloidosis
The buildup of abnormal proteins in the kidneys can lead to organ damage.
Tubulointerstitial Kidney Disease
A group of disorders that affect the tubules and interstitium of the kidneys.
Vasculitis
Inflammation of blood vessels can affect the kidneys and other organs.
Lupus Nephritis
Kidney inflammation that occurs in individuals with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
Renal Cell Carcinoma
A type of kidney cancer that affects the renal cells within the kidney.
Hydronephrosis
A condition where one or both kidneys become swollen due to urine backup.
Renal Osteodystrophy
A group of bone disorders resulting from chronic kidney disease affecting the balance of minerals and hormones in the body.
Renovascular Hypertension
High blood pressure caused by narrowing of the renal arteries.
Kidney Infections
Bacterial infections of the kidneys, also known as pyelonephritis.
