Our sub-specialties

- Advanced Endoscopy
- Celiac Disease Clinic
- Gastrointestinal Motility and Physiology
- Liver Center
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center
- Pancreaticobiliary Disorders
- Gastrointestinal (GI) Cancer
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
As explained earlier, GERD is a chronic digestive disorder where stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus, causing symptoms such as heartburn and regurgitation.
Peptic Ulcer Disease
Peptic ulcers are open sores that develop on the inner lining of the stomach, small intestine, or esophagus. They can result from the erosion of the protective mucus lining due to factors like Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection or long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Gastritis
Gastritis refers to inflammation of the stomach lining. It can occur suddenly (acute gastritis) or develop over time (chronic gastritis) and may lead to symptoms like nausea, abdominal pain, or indigestion.
Celiac Disease
Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder triggered by the consumption of gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. It damages the small intestine and interferes with nutrient absorption, leading to various gastrointestinal and systemic symptoms.
Crohn's Disease
Crohn's disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) characterized by chronic inflammation that can affect any part of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus. It can lead to symptoms like diarrhea, abdominal pain, and malnutrition.
Ulcerative Colitis
Another form of IBD, ulcerative colitis primarily affects the colon (large intestine) and rectum. It leads to inflammation and ulcers in the colon's lining, causing symptoms like bloody diarrhea and abdominal pain.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
IBS is a functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by abdominal pain or discomfort associated with changes in bowel habits (diarrhea, constipation, or both), without underlying structural damage.
Diverticulitis
Diverticulitis occurs when small pouches (diverticula) in the colon become inflamed or infected. It can cause symptoms like abdominal pain, fever, and changes in bowel habits.
Colorectal Cancer
Colorectal cancer is a malignancy that affects the colon or rectum. Early detection through screening is crucial for effective treatment and improved outcomes.
Hepatitis (A, B, C, etc.)
Hepatitis refers to inflammation of the liver and is categorized into different types (e.g., Hepatitis A, B, C) based on the viral cause. These infections can lead to liver damage and various symptoms.
Cirrhosis of the Liver
Cirrhosis is the late stage of scarring (fibrosis) of the liver caused by various forms of liver diseases and conditions, such as hepatitis and chronic alcoholism. It impairs liver function over time.
Gallstones
Gallstones are small, solid particles that form in the gallbladder. They can block the bile ducts, leading to pain, nausea, and potentially more serious complications.
Pancreatitis
Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas, an organ that plays a critical role in digestion and blood sugar regulation. It can be acute or chronic and is often associated with severe abdominal pain.
Gastrointestinal Bleeding
This refers to bleeding anywhere in the digestive tract, from the esophagus to the rectum. It can manifest as visible blood in the stool or as occult bleeding.
Gastrointestinal Motility Disorders (e.g., Gastroparesis)
These disorders affect the normal contractions and movements of the digestive tract. Gastroparesis, for example, is a condition where the stomach fails to empty properly.
Gastrointestinal Infections (e.g., H. pylori infection)
Gastrointestinal infections are caused by pathogens like bacteria, viruses, or parasites. H. pylori infection, for instance, is associated with peptic ulcers and gastritis.
Gastrointestinal Polyps
These are growths or protrusions on the inner lining of the digestive tract. Some polyps can become cancerous over time.
Gastrointestinal Obstructions
These occur when there is a physical blockage in the digestive tract, preventing the passage of food or stool.
Coeliac Disease (repeated)
As mentioned earlier, Coeliac Disease is an autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten consumption, leading to small intestine damage and nutrient malabsorption.
Wilson's Disease
Wilson's disease is a genetic disorder that causes copper to accumulate in the liver, brain, and other organs. It can lead to liver and neurological problems.
Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids are swollen and inflamed veins in the rectum or anus. They can cause pain, itching, and bleeding.
Anal Fissures
Anal fissures are small tears or cuts in the lining of the anus, often causing pain and bleeding during bowel movements.
Barrett's Esophagus
Barrett's esophagus is a condition where the lining of the esophagus changes due to chronic exposure to stomach acid, increasing the risk of esophageal cancer.
Achalasia
Achalasia is a rare disorder of the esophagus where the lower esophageal sphincter fails to relax properly, causing difficulty swallowing and regurgitation.
Eosinophilic Esophagitis
Eosinophilic esophagitis is an inflammatory condition of the esophagus characterized by an abnormal buildup of eosinophils, a type of white blood cell, in the esophageal tissue. It can cause difficulty swallowing and food impaction.
