The services of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolic diseases Unit have been initiated in PGMI, Lady Reading Hospital in February ’2013. The first Endocrinology Unit was originally based at LRH since 1984; however it got shifted to Hayatabad Medical Complex in 1996, which was the new affiliate hospital of PGMI at that time. Since then there was a great paucity of endocrine specialty, to tend to the tremendous turnover of diabetic patients presenting to the hospital. In a brief span of time, the OPD services of this unit have become the busiest amongst the rest of specialties at LRH. Besides there are quiet a large referrals of various endocrine disorders like short stature in children, indeterminate sex, ambiguous genitals, delayed puberty, thyroid, and parathyroid pituitary and adrenal diseases.

Introduction
The services of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolic diseases Unit have been initiated in PGMI, Lady Reading Hospital in February ’2013. The first Endocrinology Unit was originally based at LRH since 1984; however it got shifted to Hayatabad Medical Complex in 1996, which was the new affiliate hospital of PGMI at that time. Since then there was a great paucity of endocrine specialty, to tend to the tremendous turnover of diabetic patients presenting to the hospital. In a brief span of time, the OPD services of this unit have become the busiest amongst the rest of specialties at LRH. Besides there are quiet a large referrals of various endocrine disorders like short stature in children, indeterminate sex, ambiguous genitals, delayed puberty, thyroid, and parathyroid pituitary and adrenal diseases.
Our sub-specialties
Diabetes Clinic. (With Retinopathy Screening by Non-Mydriatic Fundus Camera). The patients are attended by specialist doctors for their various complain. The services offered at diabetes clinic are of diabetes educators dieticians and free blood sugar sampling (on site). There is facility for retinopathy screen with a non mydriatic fundus camera place in Eye OPD.
General Endocrinology Clinic. Consultations are given to patient with thyroid & parathyroid disorder, disorders of sexual differentiation, reproductive and pediatric endocrinology specially growth disorders in children and delayed puberty in adolescence, PCOS, Obesity, Vitamin D deficiency, Osteoporosis etc.
Diabetic Foot Clinic. Under supervision of SMO with surgical background 4 dressers tend to a large number of patients with different categories of diabetic foot ulcerations, Charcot foot, deformities etc. There are onsite facilities for minor D/D. Besides those, assessment of feet with biothesiometer and ABI with Doppler ultrasound, off loading with total contact cast is done routinely. The patients with peripheral arterial disease are referred to Cardiologist for Peripheral Angiography and relevant management.
Diabetes in Pregnancy Clinic. An outpatient clinic is run jointly with Gynae A unit with the aim to screen the high risk pregnant females for diabetes and those with type 1 or type 2 Diabetes are optimized for glycemic control. Besides that cases of reproductive endocrinology are also dealt with in this clinic.
Dynamic Day Care testing. The various dynamic endocrine tests like the insulin stress test for short state children, Synacthan test for Adrenal insufficiency are done routinely within the ward.
Insulin Bank Services. In March ’2014 the Government initiative of Insulin Bank has been commenced at Endocrinology Unit. This scheme is to support all the Type 1 Diabetics and the Zakat dependent Type 2 Diabetics.
The objective behind this program is “By implementing insulin for life in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa we can prevent in long run premature deaths and complications in children and young patients and also can prevent complications in Type 2 diabetes hence reducing load of complications like blindness, heart attack, kidney failure, stroke and amputations”.

Diabetes Mellitus

A chronic condition characterized by high blood sugar levels due to insufficient insulin production (Type 1) or insulin resistance (Type 2).

Hypothyroidism

An underactive thyroid gland that results in low thyroid hormone levels, leading to fatigue, weight gain, and cold intolerance.

Hyperthyroidism (Graves' Disease)

 An overactive thyroid gland that produces excessive thyroid hormones, causing symptoms such as weight loss, rapid heart rate, and anxiety.

Thyroid Nodules

        Abnormal growths or lumps in the thyroid gland, which can be benign or, in some cases, cancerous.

Thyroid Cancer

Malignant growths or tumors in the thyroid gland that may require surgical treatment.

Addison's Disease (Adrenal Insufficiency)

A rare condition where the adrenal glands do not produce enough cortisol and aldosterone, resulting in fatigue, weight loss, and low blood pressure.

Cushing's Syndrome

 Excess cortisol production, often caused by tumors or prolonged use of corticosteroid medications, leading to weight gain, hypertension, and muscle weakness.

Pituitary Tumors

 Growth in the pituitary gland, which can affect hormone production and lead to various hormonal imbalances.

Hyperprolactinemia

 Elevated levels of prolactin hormone in the blood, often causing issues with menstruation and fertility.

Acromegaly

Excessive production of growth hormone, leading to enlarged hands, feet, and facial features.

Hyperparathyroidism

 Overactive parathyroid glands, resulting in elevated calcium levels in the blood.

Hypoparathyroidism

Insufficient production of parathyroid hormone, causing low calcium levels and muscle cramps.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

 A hormonal disorder in women characterized by irregular periods, ovarian cysts, and elevated androgens.

Hypogonadism (Low Testosterone)

Reduced production of testosterone, leading to symptoms like fatigue, reduced libido, and muscle loss.

Growth Hormone Deficiency

Insufficient production of growth hormone in children, leading to stunted growth.

Turner Syndrome

 A genetic condition where females are missing part or all of one X chromosome, resulting in short stature and other health issues.

Klinefelter Syndrome

 A genetic condition where males have an extra X chromosome, leading to infertility and other symptoms.

Osteoporosis

A condition characterized by weak and brittle bones, increasing the risk of fractures.

Paget's Disease of Bone

A disorder causing abnormal bone remodeling, potentially leading to bone deformities and pain.

Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Syndromes (MEN)

Inherited disorders associated with the development of tumors in multiple endocrine glands.

It was established in 1927and it is just 200 meters away in the south of the Grand Trunk Road, behind the famous historical Qila Balahisar. Famous MasjidMuhabat Khan,Ander Shehr bazaar, Qissa Khawani bazaar and Khyber bazaar is across the road of LRH. LRH is just outside historical wall in the jurisdiction of cantonment board. The anecdote of the hospital of its coming into being is that His Excellency Lord Reading, viceroy of India from 1921 to 1926, happened to visit Peshawar.
